City Exchange with Vienna leads to a Municipal Solid Waste Management Initiative in Schools in Addis Ababa

October 2022 - The Addis Ababa Cleansing Management Agency (AACMA) employs different techniques and projects to increase resource efficiency in the city and promote the 5Rs - Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse the use of single-use items - to derive maximum value from waste. Mobility is about so much more than transport in the global south
– African and Latin American city exchange in Bogota, Colombia

22-26 October 2022, Bogota, Colombia: It is easy to become despondent about mobility challenges, particularly in the global south, with so many demanding pressures on cities and their people. Hence, the power of connecting with similar realities and contexts to find innovative solutions and inspiration to tackle one’s own. What is more, once a mobility challenge is tackled, solutions to other problems can be found. After all, mobility is not just about moving people or goods from point A to point B, it is a tool to experience and build our cities collectively.

Urban Pathways facilitates city exchange on the transformative potential of Urban River Regeneration for low carbon urban development

28 September 2022 - Human development has resulted in a significant decline in the health of rivers globally. Population growth, unplanned urbanization and climate change, among other factors, are expected to place additional pressure on river ecosystems over coming decades. As the settlement pressure in cities increases, green spaces often have to make room for human settlements, the development for trade, industry, and infrastructure. Often, this results in the loss of green public space for recreation, increased surface runoff, and flooding hazards and thus, negatively affects people’s well-being. Additionally, urban rivers have been heavily reduced to enable development, to carry waste, to supply drinking water, and facilitate transport.

Nairobi, 19 September 2022 – 78 per cent of Africa’s population commutes by foot and on bicycles every day, yet difficult, dangerous and uncomfortable conditions contribute to a rapid rise in the number of vehicles in cities and an increasing number of road fatalities. This has grave implications for people’s health and the environment: 261 pedestrians and 18 cyclists are killed every day on the roads, along with over 258,000 deaths annually as a result of air pollution. These findings appear in a UN report released today, which recommends policies and investments to protect and enable Africans who commute by walking and cycling – often for lack of another choice.

Integration is key: the role of electric mobility for low-carbon and sustainable cities

Transport electrification can simultaneously contribute to sustainable urban mobility by enhancing vehicle energy efficiency and supporting the shift towards public transport and active mobility. Electric mobility expands the mobility options in our cities, with a range of lightweight, new electric vehicles including electric bicycles and kick e-scooters which can act as a catalyst for behavioural change. Proactively integrating these small electric vehicles as feeders into mass transit can promote the shift from private cars and bolster the role of public transport as the backbone of the urban mobility system. In addition, electrification can also catalyse investments in clean public transport and new bus fleets, which, in turn, can raise the attractivity of public transport through modern and more silent vehicles.

Open Seneca’s air quality monitors in Quito

The University of Helsinki and the Finnish Meteorological Institute have continued working on the AQ model for Quito beyond the end of the project due to the high-quality data available from local sources. On one hand, the Municipality of Quito provided the AQ data collected on a daily basis by the reference stations throughout the city. On the other hand, the National Polytechnic School (EPN) shared the data of the meteorological models that they've developed and that are being updated on a daily basis. These two data sets, together with the open-seneca data, helped UoH and FMI improve the AQ model for Quito significantly. Thus, the next steps will be to publish a joint research paper (UoH, FMI, open seneca, EPN and Municipality) in a high-level journal. FMI and UoH also expressed their interest to continue collaborating with Quito in the future.

Dart now ponders electric Bajajis

Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit Agency (Dart) is set to procure 30 electric three wheelers (e-bajaji) to promote e-mobility and reduce environmental pollution.
The agency’s director transportation development, Mr Fannuel Kalungenda told The Citizen yesterday that under a demonstration project dubbed ‘Solution Plus’, they expect to procure 30 e-bajaji’s before the end of this year.
“The suggested areas for packing points and charging areas of e-Bajaj for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) phase one, would be at Ubungo mini depot and Kimara terminal. The packing facilities are already there and the only pending issue is the installation of charging sockets,” he said.
The objective, he said, was to improve first and last mile connectivity to BRT through electric three wheelers, serve fuel cost and reduce noise pollution.
He said that the project was under the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) which is bankrolled by the European Union (EU).
In Africa, the project is being implemented in Tanzania and Rwanda in partnership with various other players.
