Mastering transitions – Global dialogue and local participation opportunities
Mastering transitions – Global dialogue and local participation opportunities
Date: Monday, 10 February 2020, 4:30 - 6:30 PM
Co-organisers: City of Dortmund, Germany and Urban Pathways Secretariat
Room: 8
Short description
Urbanisation is increasing rapidly and creates enormous challenges for local authorities to manage transition processes towards sustainable development. But it can also empower cities to define their own paths towards more vibrant and sustainable economies, improving their local environments and the lives of their residents. Successful transitions are often a combination of simple but effective approaches and visionary, courageous projects and an important step towards a sustainable future. Municipal networks can play a crucial role in strengthening local efforts in turning urban challenges into opportunities.
This event will facilitate an active discussion about participatory processes and peer-to-peer exchange between city officials and mayors. A potential dialogue format could feature aspects of exchange and consultation for municipalities that currently undergo transformation processes. This intends to link major players of sustainable urban development in order to identify common challenges, share knowledge and create cross-sectoral solution and build on existing city networks.
Speakers
Maimunah Mohd Sharif UN-Habitat, Executive-Director
Thembisile Nkadimeng South African Local Government Association, President
Mark Speich State Government of North Rhine Westphalia, Secretary of State
Ullrich Sierau City of Dortmund, Mayor
N.N. Mayor
Discussion (15 minutes)
