Most cities globally rely almost entirely on non-renewable natural resources; mainly fossil fuels; as their key source of energy. The objective of this session is to discuss strategies and policies that promote low carbon cities development and thus will address the following issues:
​
  • Cities design strategies for low carbon development with particular attention on the greening aspect as well as green building approaches;
  • Green policies that include: by-law at the local government level on green infrastructures and services; energy efficient building code;
  • Appropriate financial mechanisms including tax incentives/rebates and preferential interest rate;
  • Best practices in green cities development; city clean energy generation; green buildings; sustainable neighbourhood; sustainable mobilities; urban planning etc.
  • Responsive consumption; behaviour change; awareness creation and capacity building.
  • Promotion of clean cooking fuel for the urban poor with limit reliance on firewood and charcoal that are destroying forest covers and contribute to indoor air pollutions.​

This event has brought  together players working on climate change and urban development objectives and explored the interface between urban and national actions. During the sessions, the participants discussed concrete implementation issues and actions and investigated ways the Urban Pathways project can help implementing the NEW URBAN AGENDA. Urban Pathways and fellow IKI projects contributed to a Networking Event aimed at highlighting the contribution of the International Climate Initiative of the German government and exploring options for synergies among initiatives.

The Opening Address was delivered by Gunter Adler, State Secretary at BMUB and Aisa Kacyria, Deputy Director, UN-Habitat provided an input on delivering on the New Urban Agenda and Christian Borchard, from the IKI Programe Office gave overview on the projects on the area of sustainable urban development. 



​In several parallel Working Sessions the participants discussed integrated Urban Low Carbon Planning, digitalisation and sustainable housing issues. Several IKI projects participated in the event, including Urban Pathways.
